Matthew 24:37-44 1st Sunday of Advent November 27, 2022 Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.

1st Sunday of Advent
Isaiah 2:1-5
Romans 13:11-14
Matthew 24:37-44

A. Text/Context
• In order to understand the celebration of the Advent season we need to present a little background of the meaning of Advent
• Advent – Latin word adventus meaning arrival or coming
• And the advent season is divided into 2: the 1st part of advent is from today the 1st Sunday of Advent until December 16
• It is the celebration of the waiting for the arrival of the second coming of our Lord
• We wait for the 2nd coming of the Lord in glory for the final judgment
• The 2nd part is from December 17 to December 24, and this is the celebration of the arrival of the Lord to be born of the Virgin Mary as the savior of the world
• The first part will tell us about the gospel that we prepare for the final judgment that is why it is a penitential season to repent for our sins in order to prepare for his arrival
• Where on his arrival he will say: Okay stay on my right; or stay on my left
• That is why the gospel today talks to us about the second coming of Jesus and as we have heard it, it is very clear in the gospel today that it will happen anytime so we have to prepare now
• The same thing that happened during the time of Noah during the great flood. The people were eating, drinking, and marrying when suddenly torrents upon torrents of water rained down from the heavens inundating the whole world killing everyone except the members of the family of Noah who were in the ark
• They do not know that the great flood will kill them all
• It will be in that kind of situation that is so unexpected. It will just be an ordinary day and we will all be doing very ordinary things and the Lord will suddenly arrive

B. Human Situation
• So, for us Christians reading this homily, it is very clear that we have to be prepared because a similar calamity like the great flood might happen
• But God said that the rainbow would be a sign that he will no longer destroy the world with water as it is written in Genesis 9:11-17
• Do you remember what else Noah was doing during all the years that he was building the ark?
• He was preaching, warning the people about the coming Flood. Did any of them listen? Never. They were just too busy doing other things.
• And the gospel today already mentioned that, they were busy eating and drinking and getting married
• And if we apply that today, we would be even busier because there is just so much things to catch up because of the internet that provides us the information highway with all the knowledge of the world
• And the people will continue to get married and in fact we have more choices today not only marriage between a man and a woman, but also same sex marriage, and poly amorous marriage, etc.
• The gospel says stay awake. Obviously, it is the spiritual preparation, not that we do not sleep anymore
• St. Paul said in the 2nd reading it is time for us to awake from sleep because salvation is near as God is about to arrive
• All the things that we usually do, but with a difference: we don’t inflict pain on others, we do not trample on the rights of others, we do not keep anything that is not ours
• We do not cheat in our business, we do not manipulate figures in accounting, no anger and rancor in our heats, no dark secrets that we have to keep. It is very ordinary
• A lot of people are thinking it is very difficult to prepare spiritually but mind you, it is not that difficult
• The truth is that God does not require us to attend mass everyday, but because we love God we want to do it everyday
• God does not even require us to go to confession every month or every week the Church requires as just once a year but because we want to remain always in his grace we want to do it as often as possible
• We want to do more than what is required because we love God more and we want to show it to him in the form of adoration and worship
• If every Christian forgives one another, helps one another, loves one another that is enough already doing everything with the purity of intentions and motivations, then we are already prepared in any eventuality that Jesus will suddenly arrive for the final judgment

C. Challenge
• So, the challenge of the gospel for all of us Christians is that we must all be prepared everyday by staying awake
• Meaning that we see the guidance of God in every ordinary thing that we do and that our preparation will just be something out of the ordinary
• If all people will prepare there will be peace and the prophecy of Isaiah in the 1st reading will come true
• God will suddenly arrive in a very ordinary day and we will all be doing very ordinary things
• Lastly, if we are vigilant in reading the signs of the times, in the event occurring all over the world all laid bare for us to understand and decipher so we can make the necessary preparation, then, we don’t panic because we are prepared
