Mark 1:7-11 Baptism of Our Lord

Baptism of Our Lord
Isaiah 55:1-11
1 John 5:1-9
Mark 1:7-11

A. Text/Context
• The question is why in the world that Jesus who has not committed any sin at all has to be baptized by John the Baptist?
• In the gospel that we heard JB is proclaiming to the people: One mightier than I is coming after me
• I am not worthy to stoop and loosen his sandals
• John is aware that Jesus is the Messiah that they are all waiting for
• With those words of JB, definitely, there is no need for Jesus to be baptized because John himself said that he is mightier than him
• But here comes Jesus coming all the way from Nazareth in Galilee and now in the Jordan just to be baptized by John

B. Human Situation
• And what is so significant about the baptism of Jesus by John? It is a great act of humility because there is really no need for Jesus to be baptized because baptism is a sign of repentance
• So the consequence in the eyes of the people is that they would look at Jesus as somebody who is also a sinner like them even though the truth is that he has not committed any sin
• That would mean that Jesus allowed himself to be baptized because he took to himself the responsibility of carrying the sins of others
• It was a great act of humility and with such a great act of humility comes also a great prize that comes afterwards. And what was the prize of such a great humility?
• As Jesus came out of the water the heavens were opened and the Spirit of God descended on Jesus and a voice from heaven says You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased
• God himself is so pleased of the great act of humility that His son has shown. Jesus is now ready for the mission to save humanity of their sinfulness
• This is something that we have to reflect as the season of Christmas will now end
• First, Jesus was born in a manger, just laid in a heap of grass, cold and dark. Imagine a beautiful and frail little baby lying in the grass and perhaps with all the smell of dungs and the animals around
• Even with our poverty and destitution we will do everything to make the newborn comfortable
• Then, as Jesus is growing, in his life of seclusion as a teenager, he works as a lowly carpenter helping Joseph with the manual labor
• Now, Jesus is a grown man without a single blemish of any kind of sin and he comes to be baptized by JB because he takes into his own hands the burden, the responsibility and the guilt of our very own sins
• And nobody can ever do that except God alone. This is a mystery about the love and charity of God and only a God can do it
• Why is it that a God has to humiliate himself to be reputed in the eyes of the public as a sinner when he is not!
• Jesus has to humiliate himself to remind us once more that even with all the problems that we have, even with all the pains that we undergo we can still be dignified and call ourselves as the children of God
• Even with all the humiliation that Jesus suffered he will carry us in our greatest moment of need because he suffered more than all the sufferings of the world combined
• The sign of the baptism of Jesus is a sign of the awesome humility of a very powerful God and not even the holiest being ever alive on earth can do
• We can just imagine how important the virtue of humility is
• We cannot be charitable if we are not humble. Why do I have to give when I work hard for this, they do not deserve my help, they have to sweat it out, you have to do what I did. You will only justify in the end
• We cannot totally love either if we are not humble, because real love is to accept not only the beautiful aspects of the person but also the ugliness that goes with the beauty of it

C. Challenge
• In this feast of the baptism of the Lord, we are reminded that those who humble themselves shall see and hear God through the eyes of faith in their hearts and souls as JB hears the voice of the Father in heaven
