Luke 2:16-21

A. Text/Context
• The first day of the year in the liturgy of the church is dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin Mary the Mother of God is a doctrine in the Catholic Church
• A woman is a man’s mother if she carried him in her womb or if she was the woman contributing half of his genetic matter or both
• Mary was the mother of Jesus in both of these senses because she not only carried Jesus in her womb but also supplied all of the genetic matter for his human body, since it was through her that Jesus “was descended from David according to the flesh” (Rom. 1:3)
• Since Mary is Jesus’ mother, it must be concluded that she is also the Mother of God: If Mary is the mother of Jesus, and if Jesus is God, then Mary is the Mother of God
• There is no way out of this logic which has been recognized by classical logicians since time immemorial
• If you do not believe that Mary is the Mother of God then you can be a heretic
• This doctrine was made possible in the Council of Ephesus in the year 434 and Mary was given the title as the Theotokos in Greek which means Mother of God
• Remember that Ephesus is also the same place where Mary lived under the care of John the Evangelist until she died
• Today Ephesus is now a part of modern Turkey in Eastern Europe and until today the house where Mary once lived is still intact and visited by thousands of pilgrims be they Catholic, Protestants and even including Muslims

B. Human Situation
• This is the solemnity that we celebrate as the opening salvo of the year 2021 that Mary became the Mother of God who was the Mother of Jesus
• If we say only as the Mother of Jesus it will not be complete because the maternity of Mary will only be relegated to the human nature of Jesus
• Mary’s maternity both carried the human and the divine nature of our Lord Jesus. The divine form is announced through the HS and the human genetics of the ancestry from the line of David is the human form. Born of a woman according to the 2nd reading in the Galatians
• According to the gospel as the shepherds dropped to their knees to worship the Lord in the manger of the nativity, they narrated everything of what was told to them about the child
• And where do they get the good news? It was announced to them by an angel. It was not even a human being who announced to them the good news
• What was the reaction of the Mother who carried the baby in her lap as she listened to the shepherds?
• Our evangelist St. Luke narrates that Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart
• So just think of the demeanor of Mary. She possesses an awesome humility of conduct
• You know when you have so much joy you can hardly contain it you may just blurt it out and even become hysterical and perhaps all of your composure will be gone
• But Mary just kept it in silence inspite of the surprising affirmation from the mouths of the shepherds
• We recall the words of the angel to the shepherds during the midnight mass: For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord
• And now they found the savior lying in a manger. How in the world that a King would be lying in an improvised bed of straw?
• The shepherds could have plenty of questions but the beauty and the truth of what they see and behold renders the questions unnecessary
• The details of the visitation of the shepherds would not be complete without the accounts from the writings of the saints
• According to Blessed Ann Emmerich the shepherds arrived and brought with them very beautiful lambs the best in their flock
• They also have some dressed and live chickens (if we put it in our language today) as provisions
• And upon arrival at the cave of nativity they knocked very shyly and received by Joseph and there they saw the newborn child and they humbly fall on their knees weeping for joy
• And you know what according to Blessed Ann? When they got up to go away, the Blessed Virgin put the little Jesus into their arms one after the other. They gave Him back to her with tears and left the cave
• The truth of what the shepherds narrated to Mary about the child Jesus is another revelation to her
• This is a series of revelations of God in the life of Mary and they happen so fast
• The bethrothal to Joseph, the annunciation, the visitation, the revelation of the shepherds, the revelation of Simeon and Hanna in the temple. Mary kept these things in heart
• In my own reflection Mary spent a lot of time reflecting about the things concerning her son
• Remember that Mary is also a human being and not at all times that we decipher the will of God because of our limitation
• According to the saints who experienced the indwelling of the HS, it is not at their disposal that the HS will infuse with them
• St. Therese of Avila would say no matter how much I long to be in union with the spirit he would not come
• They are not at all times are filled with the HS. Mary could not have asked the question: “how can this be since I have no relations with a man, if she understands everything beforehand
• The understanding of God’s revelations is at God’s disposal and Mary earned it because of her prayers

C. Challenge
• That explains the challenge that we have today. We will only understand what God wants us to do, whether we are on the right path with our decisions, with our missions, with our goals and aspirations in life, if we are in harmony with the Lord, if we are persistent in our prayers and reflection
• It is so important to pray and reflect because as we reflect the events about ourselves will parade in front of us and we see it in another point of view from the way it actually happened
• You are so angry this day but when you pray in the evening you already have a different disposition. You can now become very forgiving
• Certainly, the Mother of God does all these things, from the moment she conceived the child to the day that her son resurrected until the day she herself died
• So we live to this challenge by making our lives even more prayerful and reflective
• A good Christian can still pray and reflect even in the midst of the chaos of the day because the promptings of the spirit is not in the physical but in the internal
