John 16:12-15 Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity June 12, 2022 • The simplest definition in the book of Catholicism is this: God the Father is present in the Son and the Holy Spirit; the God the Son is present in the Father and the Holy Spirit; and God the Holy Spirit is present in both the Father and the Son

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Proverbs 8:22-31
Romans 5:1-5
John 16:12-15

A. Text/Context
• The gospel today speaks of the Spirit of truth who will glorify Jesus
• And Jesus is also telling us that everything that the Father has is also mine
• There we are, the 3 elements of the trinity are present: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
• So this is the most Holy Trinity that we know in Spanish as the Santisima Trinidad
• And the Holy Trinity is one of the greatest mysteries of our Holy Mother Church
• The Holy Trinity is ordinarily defined as one God in 3 divine persons
• The theologians of the Church throughout the centuries have tried to define the meaning of the trinity and in the end of course it still remains a mystery
• And so far the simplest definition that I have read in the book of Catholicism is this: the God the Father is present in the Son and the Holy Spirit; the God the Son is present in the Father and the Holy Spirit; and God the Holy Spirit is present in both the Father and the Son
• But you see, there is nothing in that definition that is very substantial to understand or at least that would hint us about the meaning of the trinity
• There is only one way to understand the mystery of the trinity and all the mysteries of the Church and that is to look at them and understand them through the eyes of faith
• It will be useless for us to keep on thinking how are we going to decipher the mysteries of the Church because in the end we will lose our faith
• Why because human intelligence, human understanding is only so limited we cannot fathom the wisdom of God
• The whole Church that we have is a huge mystery and that is why a lot of people who squeeze their brains in order to understand everything find themselves so miserable intellectually and so they abandon the faith
• It’s like a question of who is the author of all creation? Who created the earth, the moon, the sun, the stars, the ocean, the mountains, the trees and the valleys and the animals? God created them all. But who created God? There you are stuck, there are no answers to go forward
• The mystery of the resurrection of our Lord, the mystery of the virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, there are no answers to go forward
• And what is the secret that we may all understand the mysteries of God is what the gospel is telling us
• Jesus tells us in the gospel reading about the Holy Spirit which Jesus describes as the Spirit of truth

B. Human Situation
• So there you are. In spite of the limited understanding that we have, in spite of our human limitations in spite of the shortness of human intelligence
• God still gives us the capacity to understand his mysteries and that is through the Holy Spirit
• This is the bearing of the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of truth in our lives as ordinary Christians
• By the time that we invoke the name of the Holy Spirit we have to be calm and peaceful because the HS gives us the gift enlightenment and understanding and finally it gives us the courage that we are confident with our decision
• That is why in the charismatic movement we have what we call slain by the Holy Spirit. Theologians would call it the hypostatic union, possessed by the HS, enveloped by the HS and so on
• We should not worry anymore how are we going to understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity
• You can pray directly to the father, or directly to Jesus or directly to the HS. They are the same and one God
• You can make the prayer whatever you like because what is important is that God will only see the purity of your heart
• That is why in the gospel today Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit as the spirit of Truth
• We pray to the Father, in the name of Jesus the son, and the Holy Spirit will enlighten us what to do
• These are the very practical applications of the understanding of the Holy Trinity
• Halimbawa nagkaroon tayo ng mabigat na problema hindi natin alam kung paano magdesisyon
• Nagdasal ka na, pagkatapos magdasal, you are still very confused, even though you are still confused you still make the decision
• That is it, that is already the light of the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit will do the rest of your decision na hindi mo man lang naiisip na mangyari
• Tayo bilang tao ay short sighted talaga tayo. Hindi natin nakikita ang lahat ng anggulo ng isang problema dahil may limitasyon tayo
• The introduction of the 1st reading in the Book of Proverbs: the wisdom of God is intimately united with him in his work of creation
• God uses creation to personify God himself. So God also uses other people, uses existing situations so we can read and better apply what is the solution to the problem
• Most of us will only realize it later na tama nga ang desisyon mo na ginawa because you are not the only one who planned for what you do, the Holy Trinity is also there and he will finish your work
• By the time that you have already invoked the enlightenment and the guidance of the HS, be peaceful, you already prayed for your decision and God will do the rest
• You see, even the apostles throughout the time that they were still with Jesus they do not really understand who Jesus is not until after the resurrection
• And everything became clear to them after the Pentecost when the HS came down upon the apostles
• Suddenly they became brave and courageous preaching about the KOG, doing miracles whatever is the consequence and because of such zeal and bravery all the apostles were martyred
• Except of course John the evangelist who was just a very young teenager at the time of the crucifixion. John takes care of Mary
• He was tortured in the Roman prison and the guards thought he was dead but he survived
• And John was exiled in the island of Patmos in Greece where he writes the Book of Revelation
• John was the only apostle who survived the persecutions

C. Challenge
• So this is an example that while we plan for ourselves, God is also planning for us ahead of time
• And we only realize later that the Holy Trinity has revealed everything to us as we go through the years
• Once more today, we are reminded that we must have a total trust and confidence in the Holy Trinity as the 3 divine persons continue to guide us as we go through life
• We might be confused and disillusioned with the many problems that we have
• But bear in mind, the Spirit of Truth will always reveal to us the right way to go to the correct decision to make
• We always invoke the name of the Trinity with the sign of the cross in all our prayers
• But make it a habit to invoke the HS for guidance and enlightenment
